Capsule Collection

“My only regret is that I have not drunk more champagne in my life.” – John Maynard Keynes (‘John Maynard Keynes, 1883-1946, Fellow and Bursar’, 1949)

Story

I love Champagne! (And sparkling wines from other areas in France and Spain). For years, after enjoying a glass of bubbly with friends, I’ve kept the metal bottle caps, corks and cages as a memento, also thinking ‘I may need these one day’. Apparently this makes me a ‘placomusophile’. And indeed, I use the iron wire from the cages all the time for ear hooks and jump rings, and now my friends save them for me as well.

It was not until 2025, when a group exhibition themed ‘from Tin to Bling’ challenged me to make jewellery out of the actual bottle caps, the plaques de muselet, colloquially a.k.a. capsules. The brightly coloured ones in particular were outside of my usual metallic comfort zone but offered a new outlet for some of the colourful vintage beads I’ve collected over the years.

The Capsule Collection is a small and limited series. Perhaps one day, if I have the good fortune to drink many more glasses of bubbly, I will add some new pieces – ‘the party ain’t over yet!’

Form

The metal bottle caps of Champagne or sparkling wine bottles – the capsules – are the starting point and the centrepiece of each design.

Technique

This series is entirely handcrafted off-the-grid. I use a hammer for cold-connecting the upcycled bottle caps with a rivet, small shears to cut out the centre of the capsules, and basic pliers to bend and twist wires.

Material

Bubbly bottle caps, salvaged and offcut aluminium and brass tubing, iron wire, new brass wire, and vintage beads.

I drink champagne when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it—unless I’m thirsty.” – Lily Bollinger (London Daily Mail 1961)
