The Dark Side

“Every shadow cast by the sun from an ever-varying angle reveals the harmony of the inside to outside.” – Barbara Hepworth (Carvings and Drawings, 1952)

Story

The Dark Side, just like the For the Light series, is a cross-section of different forms, techniques and materials. It is inspired by the concept of ‘the dark side of the moon’ – the fact that we all have a dark side to come to terms with – as well as my love for black and white photography.

The dark side is part of the package, the balance, much like negative space in art. I like contrasting the colour and sheen of silver and other grey metallics with black, to create the illusion of this negative space. Within the different, form-inspired series, I always try to make a version in black and white, or purely black, as these are the ones I would wear myself.

The Dark Side jewels could all be considered as avant-garde in terms of style, like the Raw Mountain series, and look particularly striking against a backdrop of a monochrome black or white outfit.

Form

A cross-section of designs from the form-inspired series (from circles to waves, shells and silhouettes) and some pieces that were made just for The Dark Side series.

Technique

A variety of techniques, from cold connections to cuttlebone castings and everything in between.

Material

Black and white/silver/grey! The juxtaposition of material is leading: scrap metals like zinc and aluminium, repurposed silver from sources like old kitchenware and added black accents such as thrifted vintage pearls, factory leftover Perspex, and Brazilian nut beads.

The Dark Side

“Every one is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody.” – Mark Twain (Following the Equator, 1897)
