For the Light

“In order for the light to shine so brightly the darkness must be present.” – unknown (often (mis)attributed to Francis Bacon)

Story

This series is inspired by the saying ‘in order for the light to shine so brightly, the darkness must be present’ – a physical visualisation of its metaphorical significance. By using the colour black to contrast with gold-coloured brass or gold, I try to create the illusion of negative space, an artistic concept that focuses on the space around the main subject of an image to achieve balance in a composition. It allows the brass or gold to shine extra brightly!

For the Light is mostly a cross-section, including jewels from other series or borrowing their designs in terms of technique, just using different colour materials (gold and black). The theme here relates purely to the juxtaposition of light and darkness, day and night – a way of looking at life…

Form

This series has a multitude of forms and is inspired by the juxtaposition of light and darkness. Most of the jewels in this series could be categorised within other series, such as Traces of the Past and Bending the Circle.

Technique

As this series is largely a cross-section from other series, the same can be said about the employed techniques. They range from using basic tools like a hammer for cold connections to a handheld torch for soldering, and everything in between.

Material

Salvaged and offcut brass, bronze and – once in a blue moon – gold, and different black materials like weathered zinc, factory leftover Perspex, donated bits of ebony, vintage black freshwater pearls and other beads from thrifted jewellery.

For The Light

“Only when it is dark enough can you see the stars.” – Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (‘I’ve been to the Mountaintop’ speech, ‘68)
