“Don’t forget to play!” – Alvar Aalto (Artek, paraphrasing from ‘Koetalo, Muuratsalo’, 1953)
I am particularly fond of kinetic art – like Alexander Calder mobiles and the more elaborate constructions with industrial scrap by Jean Tinguely – and try to integrate movement into my jewels where I can. That’s why a lot of my earrings are dangly, like mobiles or chimes, so they sway with body movement.
A seemingly simple way to make other jewellery types kinetic is to allow the centrepiece – be it a precious stone or metal bead – to move freely rather than setting it tightly in a rigid bezel. This introduces ‘play’ into my work, also a key factor in my studio practice! An added bonus is the potential of creating these kinetic pieces completely off-the-grid, preferably outside, and of incorporating the enormous collection of vintage beads I’ve accumulated over the years.
The Roll Play series includes some kinetic jewels that are also part of other series and are made especially for those of us who like to play!
Mostly rounded forms, designed specifically for playing with rolling elements. They’re great for those of us who like to fiddle & fidget!
Most of the Roll Play jewels are made off-the-grid with just basic tools like a saw, hammer and file, with rotating components that are riveted – cold connection – or just loose on a wire or string. A few, originally from other series, have more complicated designs and include soldering.
Salvaged and offcut scrap brass, aluminium and copper (lightning rod & electrical wire), repurposed alubronze from old spoons (Paul Morin, 19th century), old Perspex, repurposed silver from old cutlery, vintage beads and pearls, and some certified ‘recycled’ silver from Cookson Gold.

“Just as one can compose colors, or forms, so one can compose motions.” – Alexander Calder (Exh.Cat. ‘Modern Painting and Sculpture’, Berkshire Museum, 1933)
